Abstract

Ovaj rad usmjeren je na mjerenje karakteristika polarne svjetlosti iz niske Zemljine orbite, korištenjem satelitskih promatranja i analize. Ispituje se uzrok polarne svjetlosti, s naglaskom na interakciju između nabijenih čestica Sunčevog vjetra i Zemljine magnetosfere. Istražuju se ključni čimbenici koji utječu na ponašanje polarne svjetlosti, kao što su planetarni K indeks i geomagnetske oluje. Istražuje se utjecaj polarne svjetlosti na satelite, uključujući pojavu Single-event upsets-a i radijskog zamračenja. Raspravlja se o mjerenju karakteristika polarne svjetlosti sa satelita, posebno u niskoj Zemljinoj orbiti, naglašavajući ulogu instrumenata na satelitima kao što je GOES za snimanje i hvatanje podataka. Specifična mjerenja uključuju mjerenje čestica, magnetskog polja i plazme. Prikazane su tehnike praćenja satelitske pozicije i proračuna, s fokusom na open-source alat JSatTrak za precizno određivanje položaja satelita. Diplomski rad završava naglašavanjem značaja ovog istraživanja u unaprjeđenju našeg razumijevanja karakteristika polarne svjetlosti i njihovog utjecaja na satelitske sustave.

Abstract (english)

This thesis is focused on measuring aurora characteristics from low Earth orbit, using satellite observations and analysis. The cause of the aurora is investigated, with an emphasis on the interaction between the charged particles of the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere. Key factors influencing aurora behavior, such as the planetary K index and geomagnetic storms, are explored. The impact of aurora on satellites is investigated, including the occurrence of Single-event upsets and radio blackout. Measurements of aurora characteristics from satellites, particularly in low Earth orbit, are discussed, emphasizing the role of instruments on satellites such as GOES for imaging and data acquisition. Specific measurements include particle, magnetic field and plasma measurements. Satellite position tracking and calculation techniques are presented, with a focus on the open-source JSatTrak tool for precise determination of satellite position. The thesis concludes by emphasizing the importance of this research in improving our understanding of the characteristics of the auroras and their impact on satellite systems.
